In Greek mythology, Pomenis (meaning “leader”) was one of Actaeon’s 48 greyhounds in the frequently told myth of Actaeon's unfortunate meeting with the goddess Artemis.   The names of Actaeon's greyhounds were told in the account in given by Hyginus in Fabulae.   Greyhounds are sighthounds, respected by nobles through much of history.  Their excellent eyesight allows them to spot tiny animals at great range, and their speed and acceleration is unmatched by other breeds.  Hyginus also authored a second set of stories De Astronomical, a collection of myths related to the constellations.

Greyhounds are prominent in the mythology of ancient Greece.  In The Odyssey, written by Homer in 800 BC, Argus, the loyal hound is the only one to recognize a disguised Odysseus when he returns from the Trojan War.  Greyhounds were often pictured accompanying Hecate, the Greek goddess of wealth.

The Pomenis Astrograph shares the namesake, although the astrograph has been developed exclusively with University of Arizona funds, and preexists the LLC.
Where does the name "Chimera" come from?

The Chimera is a hybrid creature from Greek mythology.  In Homer's Iliad the Chimera is described as "a thing of immortal make, not human, lion-fronted and snake behind, a goat in the middle."  In Hesiod's Theogony, the Chimera is described as "swift-footed and strong, who had three heads, one of a grim-eyed lion; in her hinderpart, a dragon; and in her middle, a goat, breathing forth a fearful blast of blazing fire."  It is Hesiod's description that is the namesake of the Photometer, with the lion, dragon, and goat each representative of the three simultaneous channels.
